I Set the Bar

As the sun rises, so do my expectations.  I set the bar for my next level of greatness; and so do you!  No matter what you may have done yesterday or the day before that, you get to set the bar for each approaching day.  Every time you open your eyes, you get a chance to shift the direction of your life.  A lot of people believe that because they've "always done it this way" that there's no room for change.  Or some believe they have reached their "peak" and there's no room for growth.  I'm here to tell you, as long as you have breath in your lungs, you can set the bar a little higher.  You can push yourself a little further out of your comfort zone.  You can start to move in a new direction.  You get to decide what kind of day you're going to have.  No one but you gets to determine how awesome, or on the contrary, how lousy your day is going to be.  It's easy for us to look at the sunrise as "just another day" when in reality, every time the sun rises, its a new beginning, and a new bar has been set.

If we spent less time worrying about what we didn't do yesterday, and more time focusing on what we get to do today, imagine how positively productive you could be.  A few of us have been conditioned to fall into a routine.  We get up in the morning.  Move through our routine. Then before you know it, the sun is setting and we prep for the same thing to happen the next day.  Don't get me wrong, there is value in routine.  As long as the routine is raising the bar a little bit each day.  Raising the bar means doing a little bit more than you did the day before.  Now that doesn't mean adding 5 more tasks to your constantly growing "to do" list.  What it means is giving yourself a little bit more than you did the day before.

Giving yourself a little bit more peace, a little more stillness and maybe a little more joy.  Perhaps spending a little more time in Self Care.  Running yourself a bath before bed time.  Maybe reading a few pages from a new book when you rise.  Spending a little more time in prayer or meditation each morning.  You'll be surprised at how raising your bar can shift you into a new, maybe more empowered version of yourself.  Some of us have been conditioned to believe we are in this life or "rat race" to compete with others.  While that may be somewhat true.  The reality is, you are the only person worth competing with.  Your best partner in life is YOU - you know all your strengths and your areas of opportunity for growth. So instead of thinking of each day as another day where you have to prove you're better than anyone else.  Maybe consider being just a little better than you were the day before.

When you know better, you can do better.  As you do better, you become better.  When you become better - well you're pretty much unstoppable.  Be brave enough to raise your bar a little bit today.  Let me know what happens when you do.
